Macchiato - Italian for "stained/marked" - or "spotted" in this case. Just like my morning coffee, I like my Sun with a little kick - the sunspot imaged here was a paid actor in making this photo happen.
The main feature is AR4079, a large and magnetically complex active region currently crossing the solar disk. Sunspots like these are cooler, darker areas on the Sun’s surface caused by intense magnetic activity that inhibits convection. They’re often associated with solar flares and other energetic events — and this one has definitely earned attention.
It’s always exciting to image such a prominent region, especially when seeing conditions cooperate - this latter was sadly not really the case here. This was captured in white light, showing clear structure in both the umbra and penumbra.
