Thor’s Helmet Nebula, or NGC 2359, is a striking emission nebula located about 12,000 light-years away in the constellation Canis Major. Spanning roughly 30 light-years, its dramatic structure is shaped by powerful winds from a central Wolf-Rayet star, WR7, nearing the end of its life. The nebula’s glowing gas clouds are a mix of hydrogen and oxygen, giving it a vibrant, otherworldly appearance.
This image was processed in the HOO palette, where hydrogen is mapped to red and oxygen to blue, creating a color representation that emphasizes the nebula’s structure and composition. It’s my first post of the year, though the data was captured during a trip to La Palma last year under its famously clear skies.
