How Does a Smart Telescope Actually Work?

Smart telescopes like the Vaonis Stellina, Vespera, ZWO Seestar, Dwarf and Origin have changed the way beginners and experienced astronomers and astrophotographers explore the nigh...

I would not want these AI crap so - call telescopes. They are not telescopes they are AI cheating junk because you don't know how to use a real telescope.

smart telescopes have nothing to do with AI. And trust me I know how to use a "real" telescope ;)

These telescopes are the future the old spaghetti expensive multiple part setups are done ,good this opens up astronomy photography to anyone .this telescope is a nadir into the future .

I really like Vaonis as the Vespera models have impressive optics/ sensors and are beautiful designs BUT they have cause for concern from rival companies. I've spent a week considering a Vespera II because of its middle ground price but the poor battery, small storage, lack of EQ mode, and expensive proprietary filters make it hard to justify. I feel like the Seestar S30pro will dent Verspera sales and the rumoured S70 would make this telescope obsolete. The transparent design is nice, but it isn't what people are screaming for. A smaller/lighter Vespera capable of EQ mode (or even a mount/stand for existing models) would be a better endeavour imo.

Great review! I bought the X version and it is beautiful ! Important note: Vaonis just did an update and you can dramatically reduce the light if it bothers you or your friends at the star party! Images are amazing right out of the box but working the TIFF file in Pixnsight makes you appreciate the quality of the optics on the Vespera even more! . You get what you pay for!

yes I saw the update. Part of me appreciates it but part of me is still annoyed as they took the time to do this enhancement and still decided not to give us the option to just turn it off... Glad you're happy with your Vespera!

While it looks interesting, I feel like the transparent case may unnecessarily add risk of light leak where a solid color dark case would not.

@the_space_koala

I see your point! I don't feel like there's a risk of "inwards" leak (The tube is sealed and black) but the light is annoying as I mentioned in the video too

You might lough about my comment, but it would make our service department's life much easier if all manufacturers would make a transparent version of their motorised telescopes (not just smart telescopes...). It would make it easier for us, sales men to advise customers about the differences between the various telescopes, although that might be not advantageous for some brands... Zoltan from 365Astronomy (Luca, thanks for the great video, I've added it to the product description on our website...;o)

Haha yeah, Vaonis takes transparency about their products to the next level

Big uplift in price for some clear plastic.

I my opinion better buy bigger. Asiair supports laziness too and the output is much better.

Could be a great scope for loner astrophotographers...that light would drive everyone away!!! But, not bugs!!😝 Apart from the camera and the multi-night mode it doesn't have anything over either of the Seestars. The cost is another downside. The transparent case does nothing for me and it seems all it does is make the scope more expensive. ZWO will probably come out with a multi-night mode at some stage and when that happens I can't see why anyone would pay so much more for a scope that barely does any better.

makes it look more futuristic. I think it's rad!!! I would totally ride my MTB thru those mountains tho

The blue glow would be an annoyance to other observers at star parties if it cannot be turned off. Better they had focused on improving the performance and capability then adding a gimmick clear case

apparently with the latest update you can dim the light a lot - but still not turn it off

@the_space_koala You could just tell those other space nerds at the star party to get better telescopes 😂 I apologize to anyone offended by this comment. I'm also a space nerd 🤓.

The Vespera II light leak edition 😂. Another great video thank you.

Hmm, 1k over the standard edition price? Is like watching money move though that case. Best and cheapest color for night time optics - matt black. Almost double the price, seems cheaper to buy an extra normal one and take the case off, use it for spare parts after. Not many parts move while shooting anyway - and flashlights to see them, not advised. Collecting does not work - it will stop working and head to landfill when the app does not get updated, just like any other smart-anything on the market today. And about star parties - exactly what everybody needs - a person with money, desire to show them and a bright blue light 🙂

It does look nice but can imagine the screams if I took it to a Star Party. Since I would want to use it everywhere, I may as well as stick to ZWO Seestars and can't wait for the S30 Pro.

I love the idea of a smart scope like this as a teaching device. I have an S30 (that I won as a door prize at NEAIC!) and have shown it to family and friends. The kids especially seem to want to know "How does it do that?!" and something like this would be just the answer. Perhaps I'll just send them a link to this YouTube video! Thanks for the tutorial, this will save me a lot of time explaining in the future.

thanks so much! Hopefully the X_Edition will create some *transparency* (ha-ha) around the magic of smart scopes and will convince some of the naysayers about the technology involved
