Hey, what kind of filter do i need for observing that bright layer of the Sun? My filter is too dark to observe anything, and if i project the Sun into paper it looks like a white sphere with sun spots. What do i need to observe the 'molten plasma' details?
Hi. I suppose you have a regular white light filter - that is ideal to see sunspots and with large telescopes also the granules on the photosphere. You will not see the chromosphere or prominences like here because that requires a special solar (H alpha) telescope. Nonetheless you should be able to see plenty of sunspots these days. Do you not see anything? It is difficult to focus during the daytime…
@the_space_koala oh, my 'filter' is just a very, very dark glass. I only see the sun as a greenish circle with no details.. but i can project it on some paper without filters and sunspots are visible.
So..the only way to observe other sun details is a solar telescope? That's sad.
@dimensio_italian_magician sounds like you should be able to see some details also with your filters. Another inexpensive option is solar filter foil (e.g. look for Baader solar filter). You can put this at the front of your telescope or Zoom lens and you’ll be able to see more details of the photosphere - but not the chromosphere
I think I'm going to build a spectrohelioscope

@the_space_koala what details, other than sun spots? Will the sun look white or yellow?
