At 6:45, is there a particular reason you moved the dark filter from position 1 (as shipped) to position 8?

I'm excited about the photometry setup with this camera. A set of five photometry filters is included, Sloan u’, g’, r’, i’, z’ filters and a monochrome camera sensor. A regular set of photometry filters starts at about US $800 and goes up quickly from there. Here's a camera with photometry filters for only US $1099.

With the IMX585 sensor I have the “newtonian like” spikes somewhere in my dark and even in my light frames which can not be calibrated out in post processing, There is a dark spot in the exact place. Do you think it is a sensor problem? I can see some of those in your video at the dark frames.

This is a great product review, and I learned a lot about specific filters from you comments!

Thanks for the video. I also ordered the MiniCam 8 after your review. However I am very clumsy and opened the filter package the wrong way and every filter fell out and mixed..... Do you now a method how to identify filters? (I found the L filter by my own .....) Sorry for that dumb question.... Herbert

@the_space_koala
@the_space_koala

that's unfortunate but honestly I see how that would happen, given how the packaging was! The R-G-B filters are easy to identify by looking through them (you'll see everything in the given color if you hold it up close to your eye) From the remaining ones, you'll need to point them at a strong-ish light, the greenish one is the Oxygen. Between Sulfur and Hydrogen, I think you'll need to identify by pointing the camera at a nebula. The one with much more signal is hydrogen

I hadn't seen your review until after I received my camera and got it into service just this week. I purchased this as a stepping stone into mono, and I can't agree with you more that this is the perfect way to get into it. I also want to mention that this camera forced me into adopting NINA since my previous software, APT, doesn't yet properly support the filter wheel. Seems that the wheel turns on command, but ends up on some other filter setting than what I wanted. i do hope they fix it, although I don't expect to leave NINA now that I have it finally figured out.

Did you pay attention after having mounted the filters that the little “hole” should be aligned as marked? I think this could be one reason it doesn’t go to the desired position

@the_space_koala I'm pretty sure I did, but I will check it--means pulling the front cover off--Groan...

UPDATE: Well, thanks to Cuiv, I think I found the issue with my QHY Mini 8, at his video 23.12, he talks about the optical indexing, and maybe what you noticed is there is a bit of play with the top filter holder that I think it was covering those 2 index holes causing the filter #5 to stop or pause. Since yesterday I removed the filter top and made sure when it goes back that there was clearly 2 holes I can see thru, but before I could still smaller holes so I have the top filter holder in the correct position but it was off a bit, now fixed and seams no more pausing or slipping... I wanted to post this for your subs that may have the same issue... Thank you The Space Koala!!

Hi The Space Koala, & QHY Mini 8 fans, I ordered this QHY Mini 8, but first day playing around with it yesterday, this is an big issue. I made a YT short showing the huge issue. https://youtube.com/shorts/xIPcX8OX7D4?feature=share. So you and others can be aware and I will send QHY an email on this issue... Thanks. I just made a QHY ticket, please take a look at your Mini 8 and see if you have the same issues?

@the_space_koala
@the_space_koala

oh that looks very worrying. I hope they'll just exchange it for you! I haven't had this issue.

@the_space_koala I open a ticket with QHY, see what they come back with...

This camera is SOOO for me! I do planetary with a 14" dobsonian, but also have a portable small setup. This literally is a 2 in 1 for me. I currently use a 585 colour for planetary, so I can slap this into my wide setup while I'm doing that, but then when I want to (can mentally cope 😂) with doing a mono planetary session, I can. Great video as always Luca and the rosette shot came out great!
